And so, with my lovely supply of Kinder Milk Slices (supplied in a brown bag under the table by the lovely Rachel) having ebbed low my thoughts turn to the obvious facts.
I may actually need to start thinking about my weight.
Properly and all that.
I have always ignored my weight: when I am big I am big, and when I am not so big well, does it make any difference? (beyond needing clothes to fit all sizes)
However, right now my health is poor. My blood pressure is worryingly high, I keep having dizzy spells and numb spells, and my asthma is apparent in a way it hasn't been since I stopped smoking.
The sedentary researcher life is not the best.
Never having done this 'dieting' thing before, I am quite daunted.
But I suppose it is time to try something new. It is needed.

If you need any help let me know!
I am very lucky that my weight has never caused me any massive health problems, but it has drained me emotionally quite a bit, so it has to go...
Dieting can seem daunting - but once you get going you'll soon discover that your trousers don't fit and start fearing that you may expose yourself in public ;-)
I would very much recommend this forum:
http://www.minimins.com/
And if you want an exercise buddy, I am available - although I can't swim :-( but prepared to try anything else to get slimmer sooner.

The only advice I can offer from my experience: try lots of things until you find a form of exercise you enjoy doing. If you don't actually enjoy it, it'll only ever be temporary... and if you want to be healthier for life, you'll need to find something (or things) you can carry on doing for a long period of time.

Cheers for the support.
I'm fairly certain I'm going to take this slowly with a three pronged approach:
1) Buy scales and keep an eye on my weight and waist size - a novel concept.
2) Watch what I eat (not as restrictive as a formal 'diet') - just needs attention to be paid to cheese intake.
3) Sort some kind of regular exercise (I have an exercise bike and gym membership that can be exploited), and persist. This may end up being a trial and error thing.
For the moment I shall be aware and track what I am up to. I figure if that doesn't work (since I suspect all I need is a lifestyle change that involves less food and more exercise) then I will try doing the full on diet thing.

Goodluck Joh!
Scales are a good way forward - I was terrified of them for a long time, but not anymore - hence the blog that annouces to the world my weight and problems etc..
And if you do need any help do ask - I am turning into a real pro at this now.

For me, like Tom says, it was finding some exercise I liked doing - biking in to uni and work every day.
Course there's always the XKCD approach: http://xkcd.com/c189.html :)
